Healthcare Night Shift
Protecting your mental health on overnight 911, Talking about the hard calls
Overnight EMS and nursing see the worst of the night and then drive home into sunrise like nothing happened. That gap will wear you down if you let it. What's worked for me: a hard decompression ritual before sleep (shower, no phone doomscrolling, one calm thing), a peer I can text at 6am who gets it, and using the EAP counseling sessions BEFORE I'm in crisis, not after. No shame in any of it. How do the rest of you unload after a heavy night?
The 'text a peer who gets it at 6am' part is everything. My night-shift group chat has kept me in this career. Civilians can't hold these stories the same way.
Not medical, but same sunrise drive home. The decompression-before-sleep ritual works for security too. Thanks for saying this out loud.
