The regulars who only exist at 4am
Working the overnight bake, there's a whole cast of characters who only live in that 3-5am window. The nurse coming off shift who buys the first croissant out of the oven. The cab driver who's been my alarm clock for two years. The kid who studies at the corner table because home is loud. We never see daylight together but we're each other's whole world for two hours. The overnight fuel desk folks on my regular route are basically my coworkers at this point. Nights make family out of strangers.
